A beautiful, clear, spring evening of burning gasoline, dirt in the air, and hotdogs is what every race fan comes for at the mighty high banks at Lebanon Valley Speedway. And for Donnie Corellis, the sweet taste of victory in the Big Blocks Modifieds was an added bonus. Chad Pierce went wire to wire for the Small Block Modified win; Matt Pappa scored his first career Valley win in the Budget Sportsman; and veteran Victor Hopkins scores the win in Pro Stocks.
A packed house of race fans poured into the Valley of Speed to cheer on their favorite drivers in the Big Block Modifieds as their 30 lap feature event took to the ½ dirt oval. At the point early was the 42P of Matt Pupello and the 45J of Wayne Jelley.
Jelley Jumped out to the early lead and kept the field at bay for the first half of the race. On the charge deep in the pack was the 20H of Brett Hearn and the 57 of Donnie Corellis. A few cautions early on kept the field closely packed, which wasn’t good for Jelley, but great for everyone else.
By lap 18, Corellis was all over Jelley, and made the pass by lap 19 to take the lead. Hearn was close in tow, make the pass to 2nd by lap 21. But Hearn’s charge came up short, as Corellis got into the clean air, and checked out on the field.
At the checkers, Corellis scored the win, Hearn 2nd, with Jelley 3rd, Eddie Marshall 4th and Andy Bachetti rounded out the top 5 finishers.
In the Small Block Modified feature, Chad Pierce took his honorary 272 from the pole to checkers in the 20 lap feature event. Olden Dwyer battled to finish 2nd, Frank Harper held on for 3rd, with Wayne Jelley and Brian Sandstedt completing the top 5.
The Budget Sportsman were on tap with a strong 30 car field, but with more cars, comes more cautions as the field was under yellow early and often. Out front early was the 95 of Carmon Carnibucci, but by lap 5, Peter Carlotto took over the top spot with his 12C.
As the cautions continued, the sophomore driver Matt Pappa, worked his way up to the runner up spot by lap 7. As the racing continued, Pappa waited patiently for the right moment, which came on lap 16.
With a late last lap caution, Pappa held on for a one lap shootout for the win. Carlotto had to settle for 2nd, with Whitey Slavin, Timothy Davis, and Jeff Watson rounding out the top 5 finishers.
In the Pro Stock 20 lap feature, the caution flag was again being waved early and often. At the point was the 311 of Brian Keough and the 29 of Ricky Duzlak.
But with the cautions, the field stayed tight, giving Victor Hopkins a great opportunity to take over the top spot on lap 5, and keep the field at bay for the remaining 15 circuits.
A late race charge by Rob Yetman in the 143 was not enough to shake the veteran from the win, as Hopkins scores the win. Yetman finished 2nd, Jon Routhier was 3rd, Frank Twing was 4th, Daniel Sanchez was 5th.
Earlier in the program, the Purestocks had their full-fendered features, as Hunter Sanchez scored the win in PS 1. In PS 2, Jason Meltz scored the victory, and Ray Hall Sr, returned to winners circle for the win in PS 3.
Next Saturday night, June 7th, is the special $3,000 to Win J.C. Flach Modified Memorial, plus all weekly divisions and the 4 cylinders presented by Whiteman, Osterman, and Hanna LLC.
