WATERFORD —It started as a long night for Jacob Burns of Bristol, RI It ended with his biggest payday.
After being involved in a lap 3 accident and being forced to make two pit stops for repairs, Burns came back stronger than ever.
He thundered his way through the field and then made a daring three-wide move to take the lead with five laps to go.
Then he was forced to hold off four-time champ Jason Palmer and current point leader John O’Sullivan to win the 35-lap Fall Legends Classic and the $2,500 first-place check that went with it to highlight Saturday’s action at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.
In other racing, Jason Palmer chalked up his ninth Late Model win of the year, Charles Canfield rolled to his second Mini Stock win, Ken Cassidy won for the fifth time in the Speedbowl Trucks, Ed Ryan and Devin Tate took Super-X car wins and Milania Shilosky collected an impressive win in the Bandoleros. Bo Norman, the apparent Street Sock winner, was disqualified after the race, giving the win to Jason Chicolas.
The 50-lap Compact Enduro was captured by Steven Brooks.
The most amazing comeback of the night, however, was staged by Burns, who was forced to the rear of the pack with a damaged racecar early in the race in the 35-lap Legends Fall Classic.
“The car was pretty bad but the crew did a great job to fix it,” Burns said. “And the car was still fast.”
Burns proved that by twisting his way through the field, manuevering into third with five laps to go.
Palmer and O’Sullivan were fighting for the lead, but Burns made a three-wide move to the inside to roar into the lead. Then he held off Palmer and O’Sullivan for the biggest win of his career.
Burns pocketed six wins in route to the Wednesday night championship, but this was his first win in a Saturday feature. On lap 3 his chances were bleak. On lap 35, however, the bleak start became a fantastic finish.
Palmer took the lead on lap 5 of the 30-lap Late Model race on his way to a dominating 3-second win over Ray Christian.
Christian, who was knocked back to 10th place after a lap 5 caution, rallied to finish second and still leads Palmer by one point in the championship standings with two races remaining.
“The car was good tonight,” Palmer said. “My arms were getting tired because we went 25 laps without a caution. But it was a good night.”
Charles Canfield has been struggling the past few weeks, suffering through a six-race winless streak. He was back on top of his game Saturday, however, blurring into the lead on the ninth lap on the way to his third win of the year. Canfield was in second place when Mark Panaroni spun out on a restart, giving Canfield the lead for keeps.
“I think we’ve finally got this motor straightened out,” Canfield said. “It’s too bad what happened to Mark, but we had a great car tonight.”
Tom Silva finished in second but was able to expand his lead over Chris Garside to 20 points with two races left.
Ken Cassidy was quiet in the beginning of the 25-lap Truck Feature, but came alive after a lap 8 caution to post his fourth win of the year. His win, coupled with an 11th place finish by former point leader Jim Boyle, gives Cassidy a 20-point lead over Josh Stringer and a 28-point lead over Boyle with one Truck race remaining.
“We were conservative in the beginning,” Cassidy said. “I almost was squeezed into the wall, so I waited for a few laps and then took off.”
Norman dominated the Street Stock action on the track, holding off a fast-charging Chicolas. Norman did not dominate post-race inspection, however, and was disqualified. Chicolas was moved up to the winner circle and now has two wins.
“My car did seem to get better as the race went on,” Chicolas said.
There were a pair of Super-X car races in the Fall Shootout series. Ed Ryan Jr., the regular-season champ, romped to a win in the first race.
“We started in the front row, and that made it a lot easier,” Ryan said.
In the nightcap, Tate strolled to his first career victory.
“Devin was fast,” Ryan said. “The race could have gone for 20 more laps, and I never would have caught him.”
Shilosky won for the second time in to Bandolero Fall Shootout. While her first win was by less than a tenth of a second over Brad Strickland, Saturday’s win was by more than one second over Brent Robidoux.
“I knew I had a fast car,” Shilosky said. “But the 25 (Robidoux) did a nice job, considering this was his first time here this year.”
Enduro winner Steven Brooks of East Northport, N.Y., credited his hometown for helping him run away from the field in his 50-lap victory.
“I’m from Long Island,” Brooks said. “I’m used to fighting through traffic.”
